My method of hand stippling is to do very tight echo quilting. I quilt around and around the open space until it is filled in. The Idea being that the dense quilting highlights the other areas. The stippled areas have a lot of texture, which reminds me of an orange peel.
Here is a picture of the quilt I am currently working on stippling. I am using a #11 John James Needle and YIL quilting thread.
Here is a picture showing the other side with some more of the stippling filled in.
I would not do this much work on a printed fabric because it doesn't show up as well ( the back of the quilt is a Batik fabric and the quilting shows very little)
It is a full sized quilt and there is a lot more to go!
I think it will be worth it.
Happy quilting
Tim

Lovely! can't say enough about this one.
ReplyDeletefabulous.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful. Worth the effort and you have done it so well. Thank you for showing your stitching.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Is there a reason as why you only use 1 needle at a time? I'm thinking about doing the same on some areas of the quilt I'm still piecing, but I'm thnking several needles at a time.
ReplyDeleteFrancoise I always only use one needle at a time, I don't find that it goes any faster to have more than one, and for me the extra needles and thread usually get in the way, and I end up spending more time working around them. I have seen quilters use several at once, but It doesn't work for me...every quilter is different so I say do whatever works for you
ReplyDeletebeautiful work! it will be a gorgeous finish
ReplyDeleteYour work is definately something to use as inspiration for my own. Very, very nice.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh...all I can say is WOW!
ReplyDeleteWow. Such inspiration! Thanks for sharing thread and needle used. Do you use a thimble? If so, what kind?
ReplyDeleteCathy I do use a thimble, but on my thumb, I quilt a bit differently than most....you can see how I do it here http://timquilts.com/2012/10/10/hand-quilting-the-tim-way/
