Do you get part way through quilting a quilt and then wish you had decided to quilt it a different way – sometimes that could mean either you wish you hadn’t put as much quilting in it or more?
This quilt that I am working on right now on my big floor standing frame is called Bow Tie Medallion. I made the top about 3 or 4 years ago and finally put it on the quilting frame back in December I think it was. Now I wish I had chosen not to put quite so much quilting in it.
I have not been making fast progress with this quilt. Due to some arthritis issues in my right thumb I had to take some time off of quilting and just stick with piecing for awhile. Now I am back to quilting but wish I had went with less quilting on this quilt! I am nearing the half way mark though so that is good.
This is the section I was working on last night.
This is what the whole top looks like – at times I have to look at an old photo to remember what the whole quilt looks like! When I see the whole photo then I can tell for sure I am almost half way done! – one more crank down and I will be quilting at the half way mark – it usually seems to go faster when I can almost see the end in sight.

ReplyDeleteKaren-I think the quilting is beautiful on this quilt. I can certainly understand, but the quilting is stunning-keep going, you are almost there! You will be so happy and proud when you are done!

Your stitching is lovely! I have the same problem with arthritis and have had to stop hand quilting. Can still manage applique and EPP but even then have to take a break at times. I have three different projects going at once so I just do the most comfortable. Maybe if you take it a very little at a time? It is going to be worth the effort !

ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful quilt. You are doing a great job quilting it. Sorry your arthritis is giving you a problem. Just work on it when you feel like you can...and it will get done. :)
ReplyDeletethanks everyone - yes I will finish it for sure, it is just going to take a little longer than I wish for! I have two more good size quilts waiting in line and I never finish piecing :) so there will be more waiting by time this one gets finish. I have resorted though to machine quilting straight lines on baby quilts and I have felt like I was "cheating" a hazard of being a hand quilter for so many years :) LOL
ReplyDeleteWhile I am in the process of over-quilting...I nearly always regret my choice. When I am done, however, I am ALWAYS happy I went that route.

ReplyDeletethanks, I'm just glad that my arthritis flare seems to be about gone - still some pain like normal but not like it was - now to just remind myself to not spend hours quilting, but to break it up into shorter sessions!

DeleteOh my gosh! The quilt your working on is so beautiful and your quilting is truly breathing even more beauty into it. I have some health issues that affect my hands, so I don't know if I will be able to quilt by hand, but I have longed to, at least on smaller projects, special table toppers, etc. If I find I can do it and make it look reasonably acceptable, I would love to try it. I just started quilting 5 years ago and have been doing everything by machine, including the bindings. Quilting is very theraputic for me, it is pure stress relief. But my time in my sewing room is limited because my stamina is not great. So in the evenings, I like to do some simple handwork, perhaps work on a stitchery quilt block that requires only simple stitches. There was a time when I did very intricate embroidery, cross stitch and crocheted doilies and table clothes, but now I'm limited to just the simple stitches. So, now, knowing that, do you think that I could add hand quilting on small projects to my evening hand work. Something new for me to try when fatigue takes over and I have to retire to my stitching chair in front of the TV? Seeing your lovely work, drew me to your blog and though I have been lurking for a quite a while. Okay, I have kept you long enough, but I though it was time to ask the question, LOL. Any advice/help would be appreciated. Nancy Jo

ReplyDeleteA comment to NancyJo - I have trouble with hand quilting as my hands cramp up on me - so I have gone to quilting using big stich and the stab method. So much easier on my hands. I would also recommend you get a quilting frame, they make some that you can sit on the base and prop your feet up. Found that trying to hold a quilting hoop also made my hands cramp. Good luck!
I recently tried the big stitch quilting as I had never done it before and I found it went much faster than I thought it would and maybe it was using a bigger needle? but my fingers didn't bother me as much as they do sometimes. I will be trying it again.
DeleteOnce this quilt is finished, you will be glad that you put in those extra quilting stitches. This is looking gorgeous!
